Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) - French chemist and bacteriologist

In his Paris laboratory Louis Pasteur carries out studies of fermentation and putrefaction. He discovers tiny beings and describes their involvement in processes of degradation and disease. On the basis of his observations, Pasteur develops a method of killing microorganisms by heat - "pasteurisation". Pasteur is regarded as the founder of microbiology. His work not only forms the basis of asepsis and antisepsis in surgery - it has also made an essential contribution to the development of modern preservation processes.
