Schülke & Mayr congratulate the winners of this year's Nobel prize in medicine. The two Australians Robin Warren and Barry Marshall were honoured 20 years ago for their work on the stomach bacterium, which proved the connection between the bacterium and the onset of stomach ulcers. Approximately every second person all over the world is a carrier of the bacterium, and about 10-15 % of infected individuals develop diseases such as gastric ulcers or even stomach cancer. The work of the Australian scientists has not only made it possible to combat the diseases caused by H. pylori, but also to prevent them by effective hygiene measures. For many years, Schülke & Mayr has been involved in the development of disinfectants for instruments which may be contaminated by H. pylori. For example, flexible endoscopes, which represent a possible vehicle for the transmission of H. pylori to healthy patients. Therefore, many years ago Schülke & Mayr started consistently commissioning expert opinions on the efficacy of their products with regard to H. pylori.
